About

"You can do it!"
A Creative Manifesto
I believe we’re all creative beings.
It’s in our nature to express ourselves creatively — whether that’s painting, dog walking or crunching numbers. Creative expression gives life purpose and meaning. It’s who we are.
I believe anyone with an imagination and the physical ability to type or hold a pen or talk into voice recognition softward or blink an eyelid can write.
I believe everyone has a rich imagination as unique as a thumb print. If you can breathe, you can create and imagine. The muscle just may be underworked. Or the psyche is stuck. Gremlins!
I love and respect anyone who attempts to step up and express themselves creatively and in words.
In today’s world, everyone’s a writer. Who doesn’t write an email, a status report of some kind, tweet, blog, persuade…
And everyone is a much, much better writer than they think they are. Sometimes it’s just a matter of freeing yourself up to write the way you are, in other words: finding you own most natural voice.
For those of you who work as Writers: I know. I know the glory and pain of the process, the struggle, the deep joy and sense of purpose, the doubts, the blocks, the awe, the surprises and discoveries, the shittiness, the holiness of it. I know how writing is a necessary sanctuary; how it can feel lonely while at the same time be the most intimate relationship in the world.
Writing is the cheapest ticket in the world — to any world you want to explore.
The fact that anyone is able to have an engaging written conversation with their perfect audience is important in an Internet-rich world. Because how you present yourself in writing is increasingly becoming the first impression — that handshake. And this writing is also a beacon that calls in just the right people.
I believe writing is one of the strongest discovery tools. After all, we can only hold about seven ideas at a time in our minds – if even that much.
I also believe writing is a great tool in which to find your way through the dark creepy woods — whether you’re entering them, or quivering smack in the middle of the darkness or coming out of the woods into the blinding light. Writing helps you find yourself, claim your desires, go after them and commit to yourself. Even a journal is a contract. A poem or a short story or a blog entry or a business plan is you creating your life and moving forward. Antidote to fear? Creation often is. And writing is one popular mode of creation. And discovery. It’s the cheapest adventure in the world.
And furthermore, when it comes to writing I believe you know how to do this. Just as you know how to speak. I’ll show you. If you have the desire, that is. Because if you don’t want to write one stinking word of copy other than a to-do list, that’s cool too. I believe in free will.
I want people to believe: I Can Do It. Whatever the end-goal of your personal “it” is.
I believe in Robert Frost’s manifesto: ”No suprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader.”
I love Keate’s claim: “I am certain of nothing but the Holiness of the Heart’s affections and the Truth of the Imagination.”
With an addition: Take action.
I am a doer. I like to help motivate and support other doers who write. Amen. The end.
